Old Fan

i wanted a fan for my place, as the west facing windows allow quite a bit of temperature increase on warmer days. this fan is built like a tank. though it also has the potential to destroy as a tank does, with a heavy aluminum 4-blade fan and a rather spacious yet very elegant fan guard. if i'm not careful, someone may lose a finger!

i do know why most fans today are plastic from a performance standpoint, but they sure don't have the same aesthetic!

it has one speed, and the ability to oscillate or to not. i'll have to look into which year this was manufactured.

MQ104

to go along with my McIntosh XR-5 speakers, i picked up a MQ104. the XR-5 speakers were designed to be paired with a mcintosh equalizer, so i finally find one! $140 shipped via ebay. it also comes with a capacitor kit so that you can customize which frequencies the equalizer impacts. there's an on off switch so you can directly detect just what impacts the equalizer has on the system. i have been spending a month or so fine tuning it and still haven't got it right. which i like :)

bathroom lamp

florescent lamps emit horrible light. so a bathroom lamp was needed for my bathroom. the soft glow of an incandescent light really makes the difference.

this was purchased at urban ore in oakland for $12, bulb included.





not to worry, the toothbrush was not purchased 2nd hand

headboard

while visiting my parents last, mom and i hit a few thrift stores. one had this headboard for $25.00, so we picked it up.

mom cleaned it up, and re-stained it. the only drawback of beautiful weather is that photography indoors isn't necessarily the best, but i did what i could. i like the style and shape quite a bit.





this weekend it was delivered and i am glad we spent the $25.00!

ice bucket

i can't be as cool as mad man himself donald draper with my full bar/cart unless i have a matching ice bucket. this one was scooped up from "stuff sf" a pretty cool antique mall sorta deal near my house. the leather handle and thick glass bucket are in great condition, and were all mine for $28.00.




i'll be on the lookout for a nice set of tongs and glasses to go with this. who wants a drink!

bedside table

i had been looking for a mid century night table in this style. mom found this one. what really stood out for me about this table was it's 3rd shelf. most tables of this style only have two shelves, the top one for a lamp and the bottom for everything else.




mom painted it black before bringing it up as the finish was not salvageable.

the sony dream machine is not a replica, that puppy has been in our family since the 80's.

the bar

my parents visited and brought me some gifts. this bar is one of them. it is a replica antique made by the bombay company, it sure captures the look and function i was going for!




i won't make a separate post just for the glasses that i've scooped up at different thrift stores, but some of those snifters and beer glasses were $0.50-$2.00/ea at various thrift spots.

Cedar Chest

a solid cedar wood chest purchased for $100 via craiglist. it took about an hour to drive down and pick them up, but it was well worth it. the owner said this was her great grandmother's hope chest and the chest has been in her family for over 100 years.

this is how the chest is before any cleaning/waxing. i'll get to that and post some followup.

Lampshade

i purchased a lampshade from the salvation army for $1.24. i then built a hanging lamp, which i have been enjoying.

the wedge

my friend stef brought over a foam wedge, i was having a music share party not too far after moving in, and had no seating. my invite said to BYOS - (bring your own seat).
you can sit against the wall comfortably this way, or lay the wedge down and use it as a back supporting pillow. either way i liked it, and asked mom if she could do anything with it.

well, she found a fabric that matched the place, and whipped together a pattern based on the dimensions that i sent her.

stef has yet to see the new and improved wedge, but there have been others who were at the BYOS party, and they have all been amazed at her upholstery work.

grandpa's WWII chest

this chest has been in our garage for as long as i can recall. back in the 80's we lived in the midwest, and this is where we stored the kid's winder clothes. apparently mom spray painted this when she was a little girl, to match her room. this military issue chest belonged to my mother's father. it was where his belongings would go to then be shipped wherever he was shipped. after stripping the light green spraypaint, this deep green color is what remained. now it holds blankets and acts as a place to put my feet up.

chairs and a bookshelf

this table used to be my coffee table, until i replaced the legs with taller ones. these chairs were found at a thrift store for $12.00 each. the color matches quite well and the chairs are nice and sturdy.

i've been needing a bookshelf for storing stuff. this bookshelf was picked up at the same thrift store for $40.00.

i don't like having the printer up there, gotta find a wireless print server so i can relocate it.

fern

mom brought this over for me, she spray painted the stand.

Lamp

mom found this lamp at a thrift store where she lives. she sent me a picture of the original, which was white. she replaced the lampshade as well. price for me: free!

Mirror and Shelf and Bench

while mom was in town we hit the thrift stores hard. a quick visit to out-of-the-closet in soma returned these awesome items.

the mirror and shelf were $3.00 each. they both were dirty and dusty, but being solid wood we quickly turned that upside down!

this bench was priced at $30! it fits perfectly under my window sill and can be extra seating and storage for when i have a people over.

we used this magic potion to revive all three pieces. it really cleans and conditions the wood. couple it with some steel wool and you're wood is good as new!

Mackie HR824 MKI + Stands

i searched for months for a pair of Mackie HR824 speakers. i was okay with either the MKI or MKII versions. new, these cost $550 each.


i found this pair listed for $250, in los angeles. i quickly contacted a friend in LA and set the deal in motion. one woofer didn't work, so for $200 i had the speakers. $80 to replace the dead woofer and i was in business.

later i purchsed the speaker stands for $40 locally


the sound is amazing, and the stands look professional while keeping the speakers at an optimal height for listening.

Dirt Devil

In july 2009 i purchased this bagless dirt devil with a fresh "hello my name is" sticker on it.



i paid $25 to a nice girl via craigslist, she was moving to chicago. the brush didn't work, so i had to spend $1.63 to purchase a new belt.

MCS 6602

a friend mentioned several times that she wants a turntable, and for me to help her purchase one.

while looking for a good looking (most likely non-functioning one) i came across this MCS 6602 for $20 on craigslist. research uncovered that MCS was manufactured by technics for sale exclusively through sears.

i want the non-functioning yet good looking turntable for a wall clock project, like this:


i contacted the seller, and picked up the table. got home, hooked the MCS up, and it works great! how could i rip apart a perfectly working, direct drive turntable, when i have a friend in need?
